The increasing urgency of climate change and social justice issues has placed sustainability at the forefront of business decision-making and policymaking.
Businesses worldwide are facing mounting pressure to integrate sustainable practices into their operations, ensuring long-term environmental, social, and economic viability.
At the University of Liverpool, sustainability is embedded at the core of its institutional values, spanning research, teaching, and industry engagement. Through a combination of academic excellence, innovative research, and strong industry partnerships, the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS) is shaping the next generation of sustainability-focused leaders, equipped to bridge the green skills gap and drive meaningful change.
Recognising the importance of sustainability in higher education, the university has implemented a range of initiatives to align its academic and operational activities with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a result, it has earned a prestigious place in the Top 42 of the QS Sustainability Rankings in (2025) among over 1,400 institutions globally and has maintained a 2:1 ranking in the People and Planet University League since 2021.
A key component of the university’s sustainability commitment is the Management School’s new Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainable Research, which brings together researchers from different areas of expertise, to address some of the world’s greatest challenges in sustainability. The Centre is leading pioneering research in a broad range of areas, collaborating with industry leaders and policymakers to tackle critical sustainability issues, including:
- Facilitating the net-zero transition in the maritime industry
- Identifying barriers to eco-innovation and promoting sustainable business models
- Tackling modern slavery in supply chains, ensuring ethical sourcing and procurement practices
Beyond research, these insights are being integrated into the curriculum to create future leaders who can drive sustainable transformations across industries.
